Meeting at 9:00 am at the Barrea Tourist Office or at 9:15 am at the upper parking area of Civitella Alfedena.
The Integral Nature Reserve aims to preserve the natural environment in its complete integrity. The wonderful rocky amphitheatre of Camosciara is made of limestone and dolomite, the same rocks found in the Dolomites, creating a stunning landscape of ledges, waterfalls, and streams that flow through centuries-old beech and black pine forests. Here grow two of the rarest and most precious plant species in the Park: Pinguicola Vallis Regia and the Lady’s Slipper Orchid.
The trail is not demanding. In the first part, we will climb a hill, a true natural balcony, from which we can admire views over the Vallis Regia with its three villages, the lake, and the surrounding mountains. Continuing onward, the landscape gradually changes and the unmistakable profile of Camosciara appears as a great amphitheatre, known as the Little Dolomites of Abruzzo. After a short break, we begin the descent.
Down in the valley, the roar of the waters of the Scerto Stream becomes audible as it flows through the beech forest among rocky drops and small waterfalls. A short and easy stretch will lead us to the waterfalls, the heart of Camosciara, where this stream originates. Lunch break (packed lunch) and return along the old drove road that once connected Pescasseroli with Candela, in the Tavoliere delle Puglie. In the past, this area was also cultivated with legumes and cereals; today, with the end of traditional farming life, it is used only for grazing.
The route continues across chalky terrain eroded by water, which flows abundantly on the surface in autumn and spring. Numerous dry-stone walls, evidence of the former rural life, characterize the landscape. We will return to the parking area to reach our vehicles and conclude this walk in the heart of the Park.
