Monte Amaro: chamois and high-altitude panoramas
A demanding hike to the summit of Monte Amaro with wide panoramas over mountains, forests and valleys of the Park.
A high-mountain hike leading to the summit of Monte Amaro, offering spectacular views over Monte Marsicano, Lake Barrea, the Camosciara and lush forests. This area is home to the Apennine chamois, which can often be observed in its natural habitat. An intense experience of nature, effort and wide-open views.
PROGRAM

Meeting at 08:00 at the Tourist Office of Barrea or at 08:30 at the Val Fondillo parking area.
The first part of the route follows a wide dirt road that soon runs alongside the Rio Fondillo. A small bridge allows us to cross the stream and reach the start of the ascent.
The trail begins to climb and continues steadily up to the edge of the forest, near the mountain hut located at about 1,650 meters above sea level. The beech forest is beautiful and occasionally opens onto views of the valley below, the Serra delle Gravare and the village of Opi.
As the beech forest gradually thins out, we reach the Monte Amaro mountain hut. From here the panorama opens toward Monte Marsicano and, further on, the impressive rocky walls of the Camosciara.
From this point the path follows the mountain ridge. After reaching a first summit, we descend slightly and then climb again to the main peak at 1,862 meters. The 360-degree panorama is stunning: Monte Marsicano, Lake Barrea, the unmistakable profile of the Camosciara, the Val Fondillo forests from which we started our ascent, the glacial cirques of the Serra delle Gravare and the valleys of Opi and Pescasseroli.
This area is frequently inhabited by the Apennine chamois, and it is fairly easy to spot some grazing or resting near the forest edge. Observing them quietly, without disturbance, is a truly fascinating experience.
After the packed lunch, we descend along the same route, with a small detour that, once back in the valley floor, leads to the Tornareccia Spring, allowing us to enjoy a final moment immersed in nature, accompanied by the sound of flowing water.
