Borders of rock and sky
Hike along the Serra delle Gravare ridge, among panoramic crests, natural borders, deep beech forests and vast high-altitude plateaus.
Silence, clouds and rocky ledges create a truly unique setting. The Serra delle Gravare ridge connects the Forca d’Acero pass with the Passaggio dell’Orso pass and forms the natural watershed between Lazio and Abruzzo. The peaks rise to nearly 2,000 metres, offering exceptional views over the surrounding mountain ranges. Beech forests climbing the slopes, high-altitude meadows among karst plateaus, steep rocky outcrops and dramatic landscapes define this hike.
PROGRAM

At 8:00 am we depart by car to reach the Forca d’Acero pass. We are on the Lazio side, where the trail begins by crossing Valle Inguagnera, among ancient shepherd shelters, dry-stone walls and wells—remnants of the transhumance era. Gradually climbing, we reach the Inguagnera Pass, where everything changes.
The view opens up and the panorama suddenly reveals itself, like a hidden and well-guarded treasure. With a single glance, we can admire the entire Val Fondillo and its dense beech forest, overlooked by the mountains of the Camosciara. Beyond that, the Meta range, the Marsicani Mountains, Serra Chiarano, the Greco Massif and the Monti della Meta chain trace the horizon.
The route continues along the ridgeline, the natural border between Lazio and Abruzzo, until reaching the highest summit of this ridge. We walk safely, admiring on one side steep rocky ledges and cliffs marking the edge of the immense forest, and on the other side endless plateaus shaped by time, with clear traces of glacial periods and karst formations. Packed lunch and start of the return journey.
We cross a small saddle to reach a trail that leads us back into Valle Inguagnera and then to the cars.
If desired, before descending we can climb a small summit above 2,000 metres to once again admire the immense surrounding landscape, also home to deer and chamois.
