PROGRAM

We meet at 9:00 am in Villetta Barrea, ready for an experience that will take us into the wild heart of the Apennines. From here our walk begins, a true immersion among centuries-old trees and enchanted landscapes, where nature reveals itself in all its power and calm.
The trail winds through the cool shadows of the Black Pine forest, an endemic species and glacial relict. Majestic trees frame the path, welcoming us in silence like timeless sentinels. We move forward along a route opening through the branches, accompanied by the intense scent of resin and forest floor. It feels like crossing a threshold in time, where the world slows down and nature’s breath becomes tangible. The tree canopies create plays of light and shadow, an intricate mosaic dancing as we pass.
After crossing the Black Pine forest, the beech woodland begins and, once we emerge, we are welcomed by the summit plateaus—a landscape bearing the marks of time and natural forces. The karst terrain, shaped over millennia, invites us to slow down and respect the rhythm of the mountain. Walking here feels like moving on another planet, where rolling hills and sinkholes follow one another in a gentle rise and fall toward the summit.
Finally, we reach the summit of Monte Mattone at 1,866 metres, and the panorama takes our breath away. Before us lies a vast natural amphitheatre: the ridge of the Marsicani Mountains, the Camosciara, the eastern slope of Monte Marsicano and the imposing Serra di Rocca Chiarano. In the distance, like giants on the horizon, we can distinguish the profiles of Gran Sasso, Sirente and Majella, standing watch over the landscape.
The silence here is deep, almost tangible, inviting a moment of contemplation. It is a place where time seems suspended, a reminder of our smallness in the face of the mountain’s eternity. As we begin our return, the trail leads us back down through the beech forest, an embracing woodland that seems to protect us with its green mantle. The landscape is dotted with traces of ancient history: we finally reach the tratturello, a path used for centuries by shepherds and their animals, bearing witness to life in these remote lands.
We return to the starting point with hearts full of emotion, aware that we have lived a unique experience among peaks, valleys and forests—an adventure that will remain etched in our memories as a precious encounter with nature in its most authentic and pure form.
