Among ancient beech forests, a living lake and pastoral memory
A hike through ancient beech forests, karst lakes and wide panoramas, discovering the deep bond between people, mountains and time.
Walking along ancient trails means reading the landscape like an open book. This hike crosses old-growth beech forests, karst basins and wide-open views, following the traces left by time, nature and human presence. A slow journey that tells the story of the mountains through shapes, stories and silence.
PROGRAM

Meeting at 08:30 at the Tourist Office of Barrea.
Meet the guide and short transfer by private vehicles to the trailhead.
The hike climbs through the beech forest of the Valle dell’Inferno and after about two hours reaches the karst basin of Lago Vivo, surrounded by rocky mountains and centuries-old beech woods.
Lago Vivo, located at 1,591 meters above sea level, is a place of great naturalistic, geological and cultural interest. Its name comes from the changing water level throughout the seasons: every year the lake is born, lives, disappears and then returns.
The route continues through the large beech trees of the Serrone forest, where traces of ancient glaciations are still visible on the rocks. A natural terrace overlooking the Valle del Rio Torto offers views of the Monti della Meta range and the Molise Mainarde mountains, where a lunch break is planned.
The descent follows beech forests, old mule tracks, dry-stone walls and open clearings once used for grazing and farming, before returning to the starting point.
