Val di Rose and Forca Resuni: the realm of the Apennine chamois
A loop hike through high-altitude pastures, wild valleys, and breathtaking panoramas in the territory of the Apennine chamois.
Val di Rose is one of the wildest and most iconic places in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. A high-mountain environment where nature, silence, and vast open spaces come together, offering wide panoramas and the chance to observe the Apennine chamois in its natural habitat.
PROGRAM

Meeting at 7:30 am at the Wolf Museum of Civitella Alfedena, followed by a briefing with the guide.
The trail begins by climbing through the famous and historic Val di Rose, inside a beautiful beech forest, among ancient dry-stone walls that bear witness to the rural life of the past.

Along the way, panoramic views open up, offering splendid vistas over the Vallis Regia and Lake Barrea, as well as the long ridge of Serra Rocca Chiarano.
At the end of the forest, around 1,700 m, a rocky amphitheater opens up, formed by the steep walls of Boccanera, Passo Cavuto, and Sterpi d’Alto. With a bit of luck, it is possible to encounter the historic nucleus of Apennine chamois, grazing calmly among ledges and cliffs like true acrobats.
After a short break at the old mountain shelter, we climb the final stretch to reach Passo Cavuto, where a stop is mandatory to admire a truly unique panorama.
We are now on the crest of the Camosciara, among dwarf mountain pine shrubs, a glacial relict. Beneath our feet lie sheer cliffs, and all around us the view stretches endlessly in every direction.
But the adventure doesn’t end here. A short traverse leads us to the Forca Resuni refuge, a historic outpost once used by park rangers, located in a strategic position: on one side the Lazio slope, on the other the Risione Valley, with the village of Barrea visible in the distance, overlooking its lake.
We stop here for lunch before beginning the descent through another valley to complete the most famous loop of the National Park.
After crossing the Risione Valley, the trail enters the splendid beech forest of the Jannanghera Valley. Descending, we reach the Jannanghera spring, where we will have the chance to drink and cool off.
A final stretch remains, along an old route connecting Civitella Alfedena and Barrea, through mixed woodland, returning to our starting point.
